# Greenhouse jobs: how to find and apply to roles on Greenhouse boards

Greenhouse jobs are roles that companies post on their own Greenhouse career board, at job-boards.greenhouse.io/<company> or embedded in their careers page. Greenhouse has no public search across every employer, so you find these boards through Google site: searches or a tool that reads them, then apply on a one-page form, with no account required.

Key points:
- Greenhouse boards live at job-boards.greenhouse.io/<company>; older boards.greenhouse.io links redirect there. Embedded boards add ?gh_jid=<job-id> to the company's own URL.
- There is no public Greenhouse search across all employers; use Google, e.g. site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "product manager" remote.
- Applying takes no account: a resume, optional cover letter, LinkedIn, the employer's own questions and, on US forms, a voluntary self-identification section.
- Greenhouse can't parse resumes over 2.5MB, image files, or text in tables, columns, headers and footers, so keep the file simple.
- Tolta reads Greenhouse boards today and matches new Greenhouse roles to your profile; submitting on Greenhouse's form is coming.

Greenhouse postings sit on company career boards that many job seekers never search directly, because the same roles show up later as reposts elsewhere. This page covers how to recognize a Greenhouse board, search across them, and get through Greenhouse's application form. If you would rather have new roles from these boards found for you, that is what an [AI job finder](/ai-job-finder) like Tolta does.

## What is Greenhouse?

Greenhouse is an [applicant tracking system](/glossary/applicant-tracking-system) (ATS) and hiring platform that employers use to post jobs, collect applications and run interviews. For job seekers, Greenhouse matters because it hosts each customer's public job board and the application form you fill in, whether that form sits on a Greenhouse address or inside the company's own careers page.

When you apply on a Greenhouse form, your application goes straight into the employer's own hiring pipeline. That is the main reason to apply on the company's board rather than through a reposted listing, which may be stale or route you through extra steps.

## How do you recognize a Greenhouse job board?

A Greenhouse board is a page at job-boards.greenhouse.io followed by the company's board name, for example job-boards.greenhouse.io/gitlab. Older boards.greenhouse.io links still work and redirect to the newer address. Companies that embed Greenhouse in their own careers site show the job ID as ?gh_jid= in the URL.

The patterns:

- **Board (all open roles):** `job-boards.greenhouse.io/<company>`
- **One posting, with its form:** `job-boards.greenhouse.io/<company>/jobs/<job-id>`
- **Older address:** the same paths on `boards.greenhouse.io`, which redirect
- **Embedded on a careers site:** `<company-site>/careers?gh_jid=<job-id>` or similar, since the company picks its own page address

Two more giveaways: the bottom of a Greenhouse form reads "Powered by Greenhouse", and the button at the end says Submit application. Some companies send their old Greenhouse address to their own careers page, so if a board redirects you, look for gh_jid in the links there.

## How do you search for jobs on Greenhouse?

Greenhouse has no full public search across all of its customers' boards, so the practical way to search Greenhouse jobs is Google. Restrict results to Greenhouse's board domains with the site: operator, then add a job title, skill or location in quotes. Each result is a posting on an employer's own board.

Useful patterns to adapt:

1. **By title:** `site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "product manager"`
2. **Older links too:** `site:boards.greenhouse.io "product manager"`
3. **Title plus remote:** `site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "backend engineer" remote`
4. **Title plus city:** `site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "account executive" "London"`
5. **Exclude a word:** `site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "designer" -intern`
6. **Embedded boards:** `inurl:gh_jid "data analyst"`

Use Google's Tools menu to limit results to the past week or month. Google's index lags behind the boards, so a fresh posting can take days to appear and a closed one can linger. Check that the posting still opens before you spend time on the form.

## What does the Greenhouse application form ask?

Greenhouse's hosted form is a single page with no account or sign-in. It asks for your name and email, a resume, usually a cover letter and LinkedIn profile, the employer's own questions and, on US postings, a voluntary self-identification section. Each employer decides which fields are required, so two Greenhouse forms rarely match exactly.

On a typical Greenhouse form, such as GitLab's, you will see in order:

- **Contact details:** first name, last name, email, country and phone.
- **Resume/CV:** attach a file (PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT or RTF) or choose Enter manually to paste the text.
- **Cover letter:** the same Attach or Enter manually choice; often optional.
- **Links:** LinkedIn profile, and on some forms a website or portfolio.
- **Custom questions.** The employer's own, for example visa sponsorship, country of residence, whether you have worked there before, or a request for interview accommodations. Many are required.
- **Voluntary Self-Identification:** on US forms, gender, Hispanic or Latino origin, race and veteran status, sometimes disability, each with a decline option.

If you have a MyGreenhouse account and the employer has switched on Quick Apply, you can use Autofill with Greenhouse to fill the form from saved details. It is optional; the form works the same without it.

## How does Greenhouse read your resume?

Greenhouse's parser pulls text from your resume to build your candidate profile on the employer's side. Its help center lists what makes parsing fail: files over 2.5MB, images or scans instead of documents, graphics, tables, columns, and contact details placed in headers, footers or text boxes. When parsing fails, the file is only attached and the recruiter fills in details by hand.

What that means in practice:

- Export your resume as a text-based PDF or .docx, under 2.5MB.
- Keep your name, email and phone as plain text in the body, not in a header or text box.
- Use a single-column layout with clear section breaks such as Experience and Education.
- Write job titles in full rather than abbreviated, and use your real details throughout.

## What are the best tips for applying to Greenhouse jobs?

Apply on the company's own Greenhouse form, early, with a resume that matches the posting and a cover letter when the form asks for one. Answer custom questions specifically, because Greenhouse forms can carry several required screening questions. Keep your file simple so it parses cleanly, and check the details you typed before you submit.

- **Apply early.** Postings close when a role is filled, so a posting from this week is usually a better use of your time than one from two months ago.
- **Match the posting, honestly.** Mirror the posting's terms where they truly describe your experience. Recruiters read the resume itself, and padding shows.
- **Write the cover letter when there is a field for it.** A few specific paragraphs on why this role beat an empty field.
- **Treat eligibility questions carefully.** Sponsorship and country questions are often used to screen applications, so answer them accurately for that role.
- **Fill in the LinkedIn field** with your public profile URL, and make sure the profile tells the same story as your resume.
- **Keep a record.** MyGreenhouse can track applications at Greenhouse employers, but not at companies on other systems. Track everything in one place, yourself or with an [application tracker](/job-application-tracker).

## Where does Tolta help with Greenhouse jobs?

Tolta reads Greenhouse boards directly today. New roles posted on the Greenhouse boards Tolta follows reach you within hours of posting, matched to your profile and shown with a link to the employer's own form. Submitting the application on Greenhouse's form for you is not switched on yet; it is coming.

Because Tolta collects roles from company career boards, including Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, rather than from reposts, you see Greenhouse postings close to when they go live. Today, [Tolta's auto-apply](/auto-apply) submits on the employer's own form for Workable, Rippling and Teamtailor boards, and it will cover every board it reads, Greenhouse included. It never automates LinkedIn, and when a form asks something your profile can't answer truthfully, Tolta holds the application and asks you once instead of guessing. Until auto-apply reaches Greenhouse, you apply to Greenhouse matches yourself on the Greenhouse form, using the tips above. See also how to find roles on [Lever boards](/job-boards/lever) and [Ashby boards](/job-boards/ashby).

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a Greenhouse account to apply to a job?

No. Greenhouse's hosted application form is a public page with no sign-in: you fill it in and click Submit application. Greenhouse also offers MyGreenhouse, a free, password-free candidate account where you sign in with an email code. It lets you track applications and, where the employer has switched on Quick Apply, autofill forms from saved details. It is optional.

### Is there a website that lists all Greenhouse jobs?

Not as a full public search. Each employer has its own board at job-boards.greenhouse.io/<company> or on its own careers page. To search many boards at once, use a Google site: search such as site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "data analyst" remote, or a job tool that reads Greenhouse boards directly, as Tolta does.

### What is gh_jid in a job link?

gh_jid is the Greenhouse job ID. When a company embeds its Greenhouse board in its own careers site, Greenhouse adds gh_jid=<number> to the company's URL so the page knows which posting and application form to show. Seeing ?gh_jid= in a link is a reliable sign that the job runs on Greenhouse.

### Do I have to fill out the self-identification questions on a Greenhouse application?

No. On US Greenhouse forms the Voluntary Self-Identification section, covering gender, Hispanic or Latino origin, race, veteran status and sometimes disability, is marked as entirely voluntary, and each question has a decline option. The form states that your decision will not be considered in the hiring process.

### What file types does a Greenhouse application accept?

Greenhouse forms typically accept PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT and RTF files for the resume and cover letter, and also let you type or paste the text instead with Enter manually. For parsing, keep the file under 2.5MB and use a text-based document, not a scan or image.

### Does Tolta auto-apply to Greenhouse jobs?

Not yet. Tolta reads Greenhouse boards today, so new Greenhouse roles show up in your matches within hours of posting, with a link to the employer's form. Automatic submission on Greenhouse's form is coming. Today Tolta submits on Workable, Rippling and Teamtailor forms, and it will cover every board it reads.
